Job Summary
The Family Support Worker provides a variety of parenting education and supportive interventions that promote healthier family functioning, reduce risk factors, maintain safety and increase well-being. This role provides referrals, support, guidance and problem solving to parents and caregivers to address issues related to family functioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize the coach approach to support parents, caregivers and children
- Provide parent-education and support interventions directly to families and children.
- Enhance family and community support network, particularly in concrete needs, such as food, housing, health, or education.
- Co–facilitate parent education, family and child support programs, and workshops.
- Focus on relationship building with all families, children and caregivers
- Utilize appropriate crisis management strategies in the event of a crisis.
- Maintain positive working relationships with all professionals in the community related to individual and family support services
- Liaise as appropriate with other agencies/professionals for purposes of consultation.
- Maintain an emotionally safe, respectful and inclusive environment in the drop-in programs.
- Provide programs in a culturally safe, responsive, inclusive and welcoming environment.
- Maintain appropriate health and safety standards.
- Develop and maintain healthy and professional relationships with families.
- Create clear referral pathways and connect families to the general and enhanced supports they need, when they need them.
- Collect data for program progress and/or statistical reports.
- Maintain necessary records/files on program.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Post Secondary Education in Social Work or a combination of training and experience
- Locally relevant knowledge about the state of the early years and family supports in New Westminster and the Lower Mainland
- A comprehensive understanding of group dynamics and family processes
- A basic comprehensive understanding of a wide variety of topics in the field of family life education, including child development, attachment theory, trauma informed practice and self-care.
- Excellent organization, time and management skills
- Excellent interpersonal behaviour and communication skills
- Experience in working with vulnerable populations and an understanding of issues that may impact families in crisis and/or in low income situations
- Demonstrated experience and capacity working with diverse populations
- Proficient computer skills

- Part time position based on 20 hours/week, Monday – Friday
- Tentative schedule is 10 am – 2 pm
- This position pays $20/hour
