New to New West: A Day of Bright Connections

Even though the sky was grey and rainy, the New to New West Intercultural Festival 2025 was filled with colour, laughter, and connection! Held at New Westminster Secondary School and hosted by the City of New Westminster and WINS Local Immigration Partnership, the event welcomed families, newcomers, and long-time residents to explore resources, enjoy entertainment, and celebrate community.

New Westminster Family Place was proud to be part of it all. We were one of many community organizations offering support and information to people who are new to the area. There were health services, job and financial programs, and even fun children’s activities—making it the perfect event for families.

New to New West in 2025

We had 116 people visit our table throughout the day! That’s 116 chances to say hello, offer support, and help families feel welcome. Our team offered some children’s activities including a mask decorating craft custom made for the event. We were able to make 25 referrals to other programs and services, showing how important it is to be present at these kinds of events.

Our Family Support Workers, Aida and Natalia, noticed something exciting: compared to last year, there were even more cultures and communities represented. The gym was filled with people speaking different languages, sharing traditions, and learning from each other. It felt like a small world in one big room.

Bright Connections

One highlight was when MLA Jennifer Whiteside stopped by our table. She shared kind words about our programs with the people around her—including other Members of the Legislative Assembly. It was a proud moment for our team!

We also had warm conversations with families—some brand new to New Westminster, and others who already knew us. A few current families stopped by just to say how happy they were to see us and how much Family Place has helped them. That meant so much.

Why New to New West?

Events like this help break down barriers. Moving to a new place can feel scary or lonely. But by meeting people face-to-face and sharing what we offer—like free drop-in programs, parenting workshops, and friendly support—we help families feel less alone. We help them feel at home

What stood out most? The strength and hope in every newcomer we met. People were curious, open, and excited to learn. They shared their stories and traditions, and we saw how much potential each family brings to our community.

At Family Place, we believe that every family has something valuable to share. That’s why we work hard to create welcoming spaces where everyone can feel safe, seen, and supported. Our programs help families build on their strengths and feel proud of who they are.

This festival reminded us of something simple but powerful: just showing up makes a difference. Being visible, friendly, and culturally aware helped us connect with families in meaningful ways. And going forward, we’ll keep doing just that—building partnerships, celebrating diversity, and creating spaces where all families belong. Because at New Westminster Family Place, we know that when families feel connected, whole communities grow stronger.
