This Spring, Executive Director Dana Osiowy welcomed a visit from Mayor Patrick Johnstone, Executive Assistant Schreder, and Intergovernmental & Community Relations Manager Tambellini at the Parent Room’s side door, while children and parents enjoyed the adjacent playroom for conversation.
Dana explained that Family Place has experienced a great jump in attendance from 13,857 visits last year to over 20,000 so far in 2025—a nearly 50% surge in families accessing our services! Moreover, we’ve expanded from the Quay and Massey Theatre to city spaces in Queensborough and Century House, bringing programs into nearly every neighbourhood. As a result, we now serve so many New Westminster families from across the city, including newcomers settling into Canada, grandparents raising grandchildren, and families with extra support needs.
Growing Impact and Urgent Needs
Still, Dana noted, our grant funds only staff and programming—not our physical locations. “We constantly cobble together spaces,” she said, “and that strains our capacity and jeopardizes families’ access.” Next, she invited the Mayor and his team to envision a different future: a permanent, City‑supported hub—perhaps housed in an existing facility—where our programs could truly flourish. With stable walls around us, she argued, “we could magnify our impact tenfold.”
Toward a Truly Family-Friendly City
Discussion shifted to New Westminster’s broader vision. Our guests agreed that walkable neighbourhood hubs, programming shaped by family feedback, and a deeper sense of belonging would strengthen our community. When asked about government’s role, Mayor Johnstone praised local charities. “Too many not‑for‑profits deliver services that government should provide,” he remarked. “They fill gaps, unite people around a common cause, and act as the community’s glue.”

Hands‑On at Family Place’s Heart
Finally, Dana led everyone into the playroom—what she calls “the heart of Family Place.” Bright blocks, soft mats, and a train table beckoned. With a grin, Dana asked, “Mayor, would you like to try the train table?” He didn’t hesitate: “I’d love to.”
Clearly, when City Hall and community organizations collaborate, everyone—especially little ones—wins. Thank you, Mayor Johnstone, for celebrating our successes and exploring ways to strengthen New Westminster’s support for all families.
