Summer Outreach & Communications Assistant 

Meaningful summer work with real community impact.

Full-time (35 hours/week) | $18/hour | July 2 – August 30, 2025

New Westminster Family Place is hiring two Summer Outreach & Communications Assistants to support our programs and outreach activities across New Westminster. These unique roles offer the chance to contribute to meaningful early childhood and family support work—while developing your skills in writing, program development, and data-informed communication. 

About Us 

New West Family Place provides universal, low-barrier early years programming and supports for families with young children. We work in the Family Place playroom, parks, public spaces, libraries, and neighbourhood hubs—connecting thousands of families each year to a sense of belonging, joy, and resilience. 

What You’ll Do 

This role is ideal for a flexible, thoughtful, and energetic candidate who enjoys variety. You will: 

  • Support early learning in drop-in family programs by engaging with children and caregivers through storytelling, play, and connection alongside our Family Support Workers. 
  • Assist with curriculum development for family drop-in programming, helping to plan to engage early learning activities aligned with program goals with support from our Early Childhood Educator. 
  • Plan and host outreach booths at major community events like Fridays on Front, and New West Pride. 
  • Draft internal and public-facing communications, including newsletters and community updates with support from our Communications Coordinator. 
  • Contribute to communications campaigns that promote our services and events to the wider New Westminster community. 
  • Support data collection and reporting by tracking outreach and engagement activities and helping to prepare materials for impact reporting. 

Who You Are 

You might be studying early childhood education, social work, communications, public policy, journalism, community development, or a related field—or simply bring strong skills in one or more of these areas. You are: 

  • A clear communicator, both written and verbal 
  • Curious, dependable, and inclusive in your approach 
  • Comfortable around children and passionate about equity for families 
  • Organized and reflective—someone who wants to learn and contribute to the team. 

Experience (formal or informal) in any of the following areas is an asset: 

  • Volunteering or working with children or families 
  • Writing newsletters, reports, or outreach materials 
  • Group facilitation or event coordination 
  • Data collection or analysis for community or academic projects 
  • Cross-cultural engagement, competency or language skills beyond English 

Additional Details 

  • The position is based across several sites in New Westminster, both indoors and outdoors 
  • Hours may vary from week to week depending on events 
  • Applicants must commit to the full work term (July 2–August 30)
